If you are one of the estimated 40 million members of AARP and you are of age to sign up for Medicare, you should take a look at the various choices of Medicare solutions available through the organization. AARP offers a range of services including traditional supplement insurance plans, Medicare advantage plans and a Medicare prescription drug plan. It is important for you to know the difference between the various choices so you can make an informed decision.

First we will take a look at the complete solution which is known as a Medicare Advantage plan. The specific plan for AARP members is called AARP MedicareComplete. Provided by SecureHorizons, this plan replaces your existing Medicare part A coverage, supplement insurance plus integrates a drug plan.To be eligible, you must be enrolled in both Part A & B of Medicare. This plan offers extended coverage of some items not covered by traditional Medicare A & B. With this plan, your out-of-pocket expenses may actual be less than the traditional choice. Some highlights of the MedicareComplete plan include a network of more than 60,000 pharmacies that accept the coverage, low monthly premiums, predictable medical costs, a massive network of in-network physicians and providers and coverage for 1200 plus brand name prescription drugs.

The next program offered by AARP is supplement insurance or Medigap. This program is managed by United Healthcare and it serves to help cover coinsurance costs not paid by your primary coverage under Part A & B. The actual coverage will depend on the area of the country in which you reside. Some of the benefits of this plan include multiple plan options, competitive rates and more.

The final AARP Medicare solution is called AARP MedicareRX. It is the plan that provides coverage under Medicare Part D. It includes many popular benefits such as plans with no annual deductibles, 90-day supply prescriptions, free shipping and more. The AARP MedicareRX plan is also managed by United Healthcare. With its vast membership, this plan reportedly has saved members over $15 billion in prescription drug costs.

Depending on your situation, one of these plans may be right for you. It is important to consult with an insurance advisor if you have questions or need recommendations on which type of plan is best for you.

A friend of mine opted for medicare supplemental insurance. I was interested in his reasons for it, since I had considered opting for it myself.

So I walked over to his house. He told me the reasons he was happy to be a subscriber to medicare supplemental insurance. “It is useful if I face a medical emergency.” This was his first take on the subject. It instilled in him a sense of calm and let him go about his regular schedule in the absence of stress.

He said, “Well, I have a fair bit of savings, but sometimes the doctor gives you such bad news that you find your account being dried like there was a giant hole in the reservoir”

“This insurance plan acts as a backup to my original one,” he continued. It is a very good idea to take out this insurance. This helps and you should take the time to prepare a list of plans and choose the best plan for you.

Every one needs medical security was what I realized. Some needed it more. If a person is self employed he would really need such cover. Usually employed individuals get supplemetary insurance in their benefits package.

If a person is not in the habit of saving, then he/she must take out supplementary insurance. Such people often run short in case a medical emergency occurs.

I realized that I had the first type of reason to subscribe to Medicare Supplementary insurance. Better late than never.

How to Enroll in a Medicare Supplemental Plan

If you are sixty-five years old or more, you might decide to purchase a Medicare Supplement insurance policy plan during the “open enrollment” phase, no matter what your health may be like. Once you have gained eligibility for Medicare Part B, this open enrollment phase will run for a period of 6 months. For those who are disabled and under 65 years old without the End-Stage Renal Disease, they are eligible to the 6-month open enrollment phase; this starts with the individual’s entitlement to Medicare Part B to buy a certain uniform insurance plan (A, B, C, & F; or, if presently open, the H, I, J, K, or L plans).

Once a Medicare recipient turns 65, that person will be given another 6-month open enrollment phase for buying any of the uniform insurance plans from A to L.

As soon as you decide to buy into a Medicare Supplement policy, your next birthday will automatically become the beginning of your yearly open enrollment period and come to an end a month after that. The insurance plan has to be of equal or lesser value in conjunction to the preexisting policy.

“Open enrollment” denotes that an insurer cannot reject your purchase of any of the 12 given uniform policies as the result of a preexisting claims experience, medical problem or reception of medical care. If an individual does have a preexisting medical condition for which they have been given care of medical advice within the 6 months prior to the start of insurance, open enrollment could benefit them greatly.

NOTE: Even though a person is promised the right to buy any policy for Medical Supplement insurance during the open enrollment phase, the insurer is allowed to execute a waiting period of as long as 6 months prior to any benefits being given for that preexisting condition (unless the individual has had previously creditable coverage).

If a candidate has held a continual phase of creditable coverage in 6 previous months, it will be impossible for the insurer to count out benefits on the grounds of a preexisting medical condition. What “continuous period of creditable coverage” denotes is the period in which a person was receiving creditable coverage for the previous 63 days from the end of their previous coverage plan.

“Creditable coverage” denotes that when a person has been insured under any kind of group contract or individual that offered hospital, medical and surgical coverage, it was not meant to accompany any different plans.

If you are with a preexisting medical condition, contact your agent to find out what the summary on your preferred policy plan is like as far as the duration of the waiting period. There are some insurance policies that have more condensed waiting periods than others (and even none at all).

Medicare Supplemental Insurance Changes for 2010

There are dramatic changes to Medicare Supplement Plans in 2010. This issue was the leading topic of discussion at the annual Medicare Supplement conference held in Phoenix, AZ. During the event, a number of industry experts shared their ideas on the advantages and disadvantages of each plan, and also told participants about two new plans, which I believe will be of great benefit to consumers.

By June 1, 2010, Plans E, H, I and J will be eliminated. This goes hand-in-hand with the dropping of the preventive care benefit and the at-home recovery benefit, which Medicare views as needless in today’s market. Due to these changes, it is our recommendation that people buy Medicare Supplement Plan F rather than Plan J, since it can be much cheaper and includes the most helpful benefits package. For these reasons, most Americans go with Plan F. And since most insurance companies offer Plan F, it’s important to shop around to get the best deal.

Also on June 1, 2010, Medicare Supplement Plan N and Medicare Supplement Plan M will be introduced for consumers. Plan N is similar to Plan F as far as the benefits it provides, but Plan N requires a $20 co-payment for physician visits, and a $50 co-pay for trips to the emergency room. The cost of these plans will be about 70% of the cost of Plan F. Medicare Supplement Plan M is also a lot like Plan F, however it only covers 50% of the deductible for Part A and 50% of the Part B deductible. The price for Plan M is about 85% of the price of Plan F.

Along with these changes, all Medicare Supplement Plans will offer a hospice care benefit. This addition will be greatly welcomed and will be used by a number of Americans.

These changes are quite exciting to industry experts, insurance carriers and consumers alike, as they will result in an increase in benefits and a decrease in out-of-pocket costs. Many leaders look forward to seeing Medicare Supplement Plan N and Medicare Supplement Plan M in the marketplace, where they’re sure to be a big hit with consumers.

Medicare Supplement Plan N

Thousands of people who have reached 65 or are retiring are likely to choose Medicare Supplement Plan N to meet their insurance coverage needs. This medicare Supplemental Insurance Plan is going to be in direct competition with the medicare Advantage program; not only that, it will have many similarities to the types of insurance plans most people are already familiar with – employer-sponsored plans and individual health insurance plans. This plan will be unveiled to the public on June 1, 2010, and it’s expected that there will be enormous interest in it.

Medicare Supplement Plan N will be far more reasonably priced than most of the other Medicare supplement plans available, as it will be only about 70% of the cost of Medicare Supplement Plan F. One reason for the appeal of Medicare Supplement Plan N is that consumers will have $20 co-pays for physician visits and $60 co-pays for trips to the emergency room.

The basic price will be roughly in line with the majority of Medicare Advantage plans. However, Medicare Supplement Plan N will provide superior coverage, given that the Medicare Part A deductible and co-insurance will most likely be included in the coverage. Not only that, the Medicare Part B deductible will be covered, together with the other basic benefits. Most consumers don’t mind paying small co-payments, and they will be pleased to see the less expensive Medicare Supplement Plan N, which is so similar in nature and price to the individual or employer-sponsored health insurance plans that most people are accustomed to.

We expect Medicare Supplement Plan N to generate tremendous interest among Medicare beneficiaries, and we’re anticipating thousands of consumers to purchase it once it’s released. The launch of the consumer-oriented Medicare Supplemental Plans will coincide with the cessation of many Medicare Advantage plans, once insurance carriers leave the program as a result of President Obama’s Health Care reform.

Medicare Supplement Plan M

Plan M is expected to have many of the same advantages as Plan F, though there will be a few minor differences. One of the best reasons to go with Plan M is that it will be only about 85% of the cost of Plan F.

Cost differences like this can be a big help to anyone’s budget. People who currently have a Medicare Advantage policy may want to look over Plan M to see what it has to offer.

How will patients be affected by Medicare Supplement Plan M? Under this plan, 50% of the Part A deductible will be covered. And for hospitalizations of more than 60 days, Plan M will provide 100% of the co-insurance requirement.

Plan M also allows for 365 additional days of hospitalization after the Medicare limits are reached. The plan also covers 100% of Part B co-insurance requirements for physician, lab, and outpatient costs. And it also covers the expense of the first three pints of blood used during the year, when required.

With this plan, consumers also get a co-insurance payment of as much as $133.50 for every day of any stay in a skilled nursing facility that is more than 21 days in total. During travel abroad, the plan will cover up to 80% of the costs of emergency care. And as with all Medigap policies, Plan M will also have hospice care coverage.

Now that Medicare Supplement Plan M has emerged, consumers who have been using Medicare Advantage need to review the terms of their policies. Over the next few years, Medicare Advantage will see reductions in benefits and higher premiums.

This problem can be avoided with Plan M. For a similar premium price, the consumer can get comprehensive coverage with Plan M, and at a lower cost. It’s important that you discuss the details of the plans you’re considering with an insurance specialist. Our company has a proven track record when it comes to helping consumers make the right decisions.
